Eleanor Grace is ten months old

Eleanor (pictured here at OMSI yesterday) is ten months old today.

I know that I am supposed to say that I can't believe it. But truthfully, it has felt like ten months. At least.

She is such a joyful, giggly, beautiful baby. She is a light to our lives. But she doesn't really like to sleep. Like, at all. She does like to nurse. Like, all the time.

I know that she will start to sleep eventually (heck, James does now, and I never believed that would happen), and I would not trade the last ten months for anything, even if I won't remember them too clearly.

Here are some quick stats of things I want to remember. Then I'm going to bed:

weight: 22 lbs at 9 months (big girl, note thighs in the last picture)
favorite foods: refuses purees; loves chicken, string cheese, oatmeal, and fruit of all kinds
loves: dogs, dancing, Sophie the giraffe, the Tupperware drawer, fabric play tunnels, big brother, flushing toilets and pulling down toilet paper, eating
ticklish: everywhere, especially armpits and neck
sounds that have meaning: "Mama"; meaning: unknown (possibly "breast milk, now!")
movement: pulling up and shuffling around on everything; extremely fast crawler

That's all I can think of for now.. maybe will update this post when I have had more sleep (5 to 10 years from now)...

Anyway, I love that girl so much it hurts. In a good, exhausting sort of way.

happy weekend

Happy weekend!
In the greater-Portland area we are switching out our beautiful sunshine for rain, beginning this evening.

Luckily, we took full advantage of the sunshine this week with bike rides, park trips, and even swimming yesterday.

One day it was so warm that Elle had to take her pants off at the park.

But, Autumn begins tomorrow. I am celebrating by making soup tonight.

Tomorrow we are going to the Farmer's Market and having some friends over for dinner. I hope it's rainy and cozy.

Happy Autumn Eve everyone!

happy weekend

Happy weekend, friends.

We are heading to Corvallis for a family photo shoot tomorrow. I bought the kids long-sleeve shirts to wear, but we may be switching that up since it is supposed to be above ninety degrees tomorrow...

... and then rainy on Sunday, of course.

What is everyone else up to?

summer, as seen through the diaper bag camera

Remember how I was super dramatic about how busy we have been all summer? Well, I decided to share just a few snippets of what we have been up to.
All these pictures were taken with the little camera I keep in my diaper bag and pull out when ever I think "I really need to document this!"
Half of them are taken while balancing a baby in one arm. So, not the best quality, but, hey, at least I'm documenting...

Corbett Fourth of July Parade. Always entertaining:

Happy Valley Splash Pad:

Nerf gun buddies!:

All ready for camping:

The dudes. Fishing. Hanging out. Doing what dudes do:

More dude stuff: throwing rocks into water:

My child was a blur the entire camping trip:

 Happy camper:

James and daddy on the tube:

Rock climbing gym. James can't stop talking about it, even though this was as far up as he climbed:

The zoo with our friends the Triplet Gals:

Blue Lake splash pad (goggles optional):

Pony ride:

a little work mixed in with all the fun:

touring the Rose Garden (that's what I'm calling it regardless. Just like Civic Stadium.) :

getting messy in the sand box:

Hopefully some recipes and more house tour soon! (I know, you are just on the edge of your seat, ha)

excuses, excuses...

Dear Friends,

At the risk of sounding dramatic, July was a zoo. August seems to be following suit. There have been camping trips, zoo trips, pool parties, park dates, baby showers, bike rides, church soft ball league, hikes, business trips (Lane, obviously), vacation Bible school, yard work, a heck of a lot of driveway baseball, friends and family visiting, visiting of family and friends, outdoor eating, outdoor playing, and not a lot of sleeping.

As much as I love having a rotating door and staying busy, I am hoping that some lazy summer days are ahead. And maybe some sleep. And, possibly, even a little more blogging.

Until then,
Ashley

peace through the coughing

I'm going to make this quick because I don't have much time, but I have been getting text messages from friends who read my last posts and wanted to know why the heck we were in the ER. Here's why:

A few weeks ago I put Eleanor to bed around nine or ten and noticed she was snoring heavily. Lane and I laughed it off, thinking it was cute. A couple hours later she woke up with a horrible sounding hoarse cough and struggling to take breaths. She also spit up a bunch of mucous. I freaked out and we called the advice nurse.

The nurse had me hold the phone up to Elle's mouth so she could listen to the breathing. "She has croup cough" she told me, "It's a virus that closes up the airways in her throat and makes it difficult for her to breath. Take her in the bathroom with a hot shower running for ten minutes. No more than ten minutes, because you need to take her to the emergency room."

I immediately started shaking and praying, and we did just what the nurse told us.

As I drove to the hospital I recited Philippians 4: 6 and 7 over and over:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

I got there at about one in the morning. They looked Eleanor over, listened to her horrendous barking cough, and told me to wait. And so I waited. For three hours.

I feel there are a few appropriate side-notes here, if I may. The first being this: What the heck is with the wait  at the emergency room? Does not the very nature of an emergency mean it cannot wait? The nurse told me that my sweet baby's airways were closing up, and then they make me wait!? Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer...
The second side-note it this: The Gresham/Troutdale ER attracts some interesting customers between one and three am on a Saturday morning. From the lady playing a very loud game of Bingo on her phone to the girl who was continually sticking a toothbrush into a Sprite bottle and then chewing on it, it was a sociological experience for sure.

Finally, after three hours of praying, we were admitted into the actual hospital. After another hour of waiting and praying, the doctor came in. He looked Eleanor over. He listened to her lungs and her heart. He checked her ears and her mouth. He looked perplexed.

He explained to me that she sounded great. No cough. No obstruction of the airways. He told me it must have just sounded like a really bad cough, but it couldn't have been croup. Then he left the room.

I sat there a little confused. She had definitely been struggling to breath. The advice nurse was sure of it. The triage nurse was sure of it. Suddenly, the doctor came back in. "I just spoke with the triage nurse, and she said that your baby had the croup cough when you came in" he explained. So he reexamined her. He checked her breathing, her chest, her back, her heart, her mouth, her ears. He looked perplexed again. "It's like she cured herself" he mumbled. I smiled and tried to think of something less corny than "Well, that's the power of prayer."

I left the ER at five in the morning, praising the God of miracles who listens to our prayers and who heals.

a few photos...

I have been horrible about blogging the last couple weeks, ever since I hinted at the ER visit, and then never explained myself. I will...eventually.
Until then, here are a few pictures and updates from the past couple weeks, in no particular order...

This girl started eating rice cereal. She is over the moon about it. Seriously, our kids love food.

We had a fun mother's day exploring downtown Hood River. (We didn't take many pictures)

Kipper became Wonder Dog.

This guy stopped napping. (Perhaps a reason for the lack of blog posts?)

And baby Eleanor will be six months in four days. Crazy.

Eleanor Grace is five months old

This girl is five months today.

Eleanor means "light" and it could not be more fitting. She is such a sweet little light in our lives.

She is happy, talkative, ticklish, and just so beautiful. We are blessed.

PS this post inspired by Sara, who (unlike me) gives us monthly updates on her cute little ones.

This time a year ago: Yum.

happy weekend

This was my view this morning: a basil parmesan omelet and a happy little gal in her brother's old blue striped pj's.

As mentioned before, James has been at grandma and grandpa's house for the last couple days and, although we miss him terribly, I can't believe how much time I have! So far I have spent forty five minutes in New Seasons (I know, it's almost embarrassing; I won't even tell you how much money I spent on cheese alone), went for a run, had a coffee date (and an actual conversation, apparently people still do that), did a weight workout with Lane, read my Bible, ate meals sitting down, and got nothing done around the house. Today, Elle and I are planning another run and then going to meet up with Lane at Edgefield (he is there for "work" today... they call it "team bonding"). All that to say, James comes home tomorrow, and I can't wait. Oh man, I miss that kid.

I hope you have a cozy weekend full of buttery breakfasts and comforting soups.

eleanor's style

I know this post is about Eleanor, but I have to begin it with my own confession: I haven't bought her any clothes.

Okay, that's not entirely true. I did buy her some plain white onsies and a couple pairs of pj's (all of which she has already outgrown), and some clothes from a friend of mine (although she doesn't fit in most of those yet). But, for the most part, she has only worn clothes that people have given to me or hand-me-downs that I have received. I hold the same philosophy for her clothing that I do for James and my own: I would rather do a lot of laundry than have a lot of clothes. Especially since she grows out of everything about five minutes after I put her in it.

We have also shopped James' closet a little. The onsie in the picture above was found in James closet, but I don't remember him ever wearing it. (What a coincidence, she is wearing an "I heart NY" onsie and playing with brothers' wooden taxi cab. What are the odds?)

The adorable outfit above was one that I bought from a friend. It is a little big for her, but is so sweet and girly that I will have to take better pictures of her in it when it fits perfectly.

This dress is a hand-me-down. It probably doesn't fit anymore, so I had to document the one time I put her in it. Also, the over-sized bow just kills me.

Light pink cords on those chubby little legs... Does it get any cuter?

The above sweatshirt was Lane's when he was a baby. She wore it to the aquarium because it has a little whale on it (themed clothing: cool or completely nerdy?). I had to pair it with offensively pink leggings because I am trying to avoid at all costs ever hearing "Oh, what a sweet baby! How old is he?"
That was the first and last time she will ever wear the sweatshirt as it barely buttoned over her adorable barrel of a belly.

This sweatshirt also belonged to Lane when he was a baby. I love that it shows off those gorgeous blue eyes. (Can you tell that this is the only photo in this post that I took with my nice camera?)

Last, but certainly not least: Elle rockin' the bandanna bib. These are great because a. they can capture drool regardless of which direction the head is turned b. no dealing with rough velcro c. they are stinkin' cute. I must purchase more of these...

So there you have it. A quick run-through of Eleanor's style. Most days, however, she dresses just like her mom: casual top and comfy leggings.

If you are a mom of a girl: How do you dress your daughter?
If you aren't: How do you think you would dress her?

This time, a year ago: a trip to the art museum and morning glory muffins
